BISS parking management system has been successfully operating at Riga Airport since 2011. Every day, many passengers arrive at Riga Airport, with many of them being electric vehicle (EV) owners or renters. Therefore, the airport’s parking lots have been equipped with an EV charging infrastructure and a convenient payment solution for EV charging.
In collaboration with Verifone and Swedbank, BISS has developed a new solution for airport parking –EV charging stations and payment options. Riga Airport passengers will now be able to conveniently charge their EVs and pay at the parking kiosk using a bankcard.
The popularity of electric vehicles is rapidly growing in Latvia, reflecting the increasing public interest in environmentally friendly transportation. The latest data from the Road Traffic Safety Directorate shows that as of January1, 2024, there were 6,576 electric vehicles registered in Latvia, marking an almost 60% increase compared to January 1 of the previous year. Given this growth rate, each new or renovated building is required to equip at least 10% of its parking spaces with EV charging stations.
While the availability of EV charging stations is a step forward, most current payment options at these stations are app-based, which means they lack a convenient and reliable payment solution.
Swedbank Latvia, in collaboration with BISS and Verifone, has introduced a new EV charging payment solution in Latvia. This is the first Swedbank Latvia solution that allows EV owners to pay with a bank card at the parking kiosk. The payment process involves reserving an amount on the card, like how it works at fuel stations, ensuring a smooth and secure transaction. This makes EV charging more accessible and user-friendly for everyone.
The EV charging payment solution is currently a pilot project at Riga Airport. BISS, in collaboration with Swedbank and Verifone, has developed a solution that ensures a seamless payment experience. Swedbank provides card acceptance and certification, Verifone supplies the POS terminals, while BISS supplies the EV charging stations and parking kiosks, ensuring the connection between them.
EV owners in Riga Airport’s parking lots will be able to pay for charging with a bank card, which can also be connected to a digital wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay), making the process even more convenient and accessible.
BISS plans to continue developing EV charging stations to support environmentally friendly transportation in Latvia and neighboring countries, including Estonia and Lithuania.
Due to the collaboration between BISS, Swedbank, and Verifone, EV charging stations will offer payment via bank cards, making the charging process more convenient and accessible for users. This partnership supports sustainable transportation today and fosters future developments in EV charging infrastructure.
